Case study scenario – PlanetG3

PlanetG3 is a small start-up company located in Sydney. They currently have eight employees and are planning to expand their office premises in the near future. PlanetG3 has consulted with your company XYZ Networking Services to setup their small office network.

As a Network Engineer at XYZ Networking Services, you are given the task of planning and designing the small office network for your client. You will be reporting to your project manager at XYZ Networking Services Mark Myers (Email: markmyers@xyz.com , Phone: 0415987563)

Your client contact is Jason Brown (PlanetG3 Manager: Phone: 0415875988, Email: jbrown@gmail.com)

Continue reading this PlanetG3 case study scenario in document PlanetG3 Project scenario (PlanetG3_Project_Scenario.pdf).

Part 1: Install software

Scenario –PlanetG3 software installation

You have already completed for the network installation, configure, test and secure for the PlanetG3 network.

Your client representative, Jason Brown, has decided that PlanetG3 would like to adopt Chrome as the common browser across the organisation. This network software needs to be installed and configured on the client machines.

The client representative, Jason Brown, is also finding that they are regularly receiving customer files in a pdf version. For this reason, PlanetG3 would also like to install Adobe Acrobat Reader. This also needs to be installed and configured on the client machines.

You have been asked to perform these software installations.

Step 1.1 Create virtual machine

Note: If you already have Virtual Box installed on your computer, you will not need to install it again. You also may have already installed Windows 10 in Virtual Box in a previous unit; if it is still within its trial period, you can use it for this assessment. If the trial period has expired, you will need to create a new virtual machine and install Windows 10 before completing the assessment tasks.

The following steps are to be completed within this virtual machine.

Step 1.2 Install network software

In this step you will install and configure network software according to network design and industry standards. To do this:

  1. Find and download the latest version of Google Chrome.
  2. Install this network software in the virtual machine.
  3. Configure the network software to do the following:
    1. Open new sessions at com.au
    2. Set the language to English (United Kingdom)
    3. Not offer to save passwords.

Include step-by-step screenshots and brief descriptions to provide evidence of your work in the table below.

Hint: At the time of publication the link to the Google Chrome download was https://www.google.com.au/intl/en_au/chrome/

Step 1.3 Install other software

In this step you will install and configure other software according to network design and industry standards. To do this:

  1. Find and download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Do not include any other offered software, utilities or add-ons.
  2. Determine the amount of space required to install this software and confirm that there is sufficient hardware space to accommodate this. Include your calculations in the box below along with your screenshots.
  3. Install this software in the virtual machine.
  4. Configure the software to do the following:
    1. Do not show messages when launching Adobe Acrobat.
    2. The default page layout is to be Two-Up Continuous.
    3. Rendering should smooth text for monitors.

Include step-by-step screenshots and brief descriptions to provide evidence of your work in the table below.

Hint: At the time of publication the link to Adobe Acrobat Reader download washttps://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

Part 2: Finalise network design

In this part you will document the final network design and associated hardware, software and security features.

Preparation

For this assessment you will be using the XYZ Network handover template – (XYZ_Network_Handover_Template.docx). This document template will be used to document your network handover for PlanetG3.

Open this document template and save it as PlanetG3_Network_Handover_yourname.docx. You will be writing your PlanetG3 Network handover document as you progress through the steps of this assessment.

Step 2.1 Final network design

Return to the PlanetG3 network design diagram you created in Case study 1 assessment. Double-check the following:

  • Your diagram is up to date and reflects your network installation and the client requirements
  • All devices and connections are labelled correctly in your diagram
  • All wired and wireless connections are visible in your diagram.

Include this diagram in your PlanetG3 Network handover under Part 1: Network design, 1.1 Network design diagram.

Hint: Look at the PlanetG3 packet tracer file you created in Skills 1 assessment.

Step 2.2 Network hardware and software

For each hardware device in your PlanetG3 small office network document the following information according to the client requirements:

  • Device ID, e.g. PC1
  • Installed software including operating systems and application software.

Include this information in your PlanetG3 Network handover under Part 1: Finalised network design, 1.2 Network device hardware and software. Add rows to the table as required.

Step 2.3 Network security

For each security feature in your PlanetG3 small office network document the following information according to the client requirements:

  • Security feature type, e.g. Virus protection
  • Description of how the security feature was implemented e.g. Windows Defender updated and enabled on all end user devices.

Include this information in your PlanetG3 Network handover under Part 1: Finalised network design, 1.3 Network security. Add rows to the table as required.

Part 3: Document network procedures

In this part of the assessment you will document installation, boot up and configuration procedures as per client requirements.

Scenario – PlanetG3 Network procedures

Your client representative, Jason Brown, has asked that PlanetG3 be provide with documentation so that they can continue to support the network after the initial setup. Specifically he has asked for the following:

  1. Network installation and configuration procedure – this will outline the steps of the network installation and associated configuration settings
  2. Boot up procedure – this will outline the steps required for staff to customise which applications start on their PC at boot up.

This is a task that has been assigned to you to complete.

Step 3.1 Document network installation and configuration

Prepare a simple procedure to document the setup and configuration of the client’s network. This procedure must outline:

  • Instructions for the order in which devices are added to the network
  • The associated configurations settings for the device

Include this information in your PlanetG3 Network handover under Part 2: Network procedures, 2.1 Network installation and configuration. Use the table provided, adding additional rows as required.

Hint: Look at your PlanetG3 Network installation plan task list.

Step 3.2 Document boot up

Prepare a simple one-page procedure for PlanetG3 staff to customise which applications start at boot up. This procedure must include ordered instructions and screenshots.

Include this information in your PlanetG3 Network handover under Part 2: Network procedures, 2.2 Boot up. Use the table provided, adding additional rows as required.

Hint: Look at modifying the Windows start-up applications.

Part 4: Complete handover

Step 4.1 Signoff network handover

You now need to ensure client sign-off for your network handover and associated components. To do this:

  1. In your PlanetG3 Network handover under Part 3: Client signoff complete the details according to the scenario.
  2. Prepare an email to send to your client contact Jason Brown, copying your project manager at XYZ Networking Services, Mark Myers and your assessor.

In this email you need to:

  • Indicate who you are sending this email to and who you are copying in on the email.
  • Include an appropriate business subject line.
  • Request client sign-off for your network handover and associated components.
  • Include information for replying to the email to ensure that you get a correctly signed copy of the network handover.
  • Write the email in a business-like manner.
  1. Use the following table for your answer. (Approx. 100 words)

Assessment checklist

The following checklist will be used by your assessor to mark your performance against the assessment criteria of your submitted assessment. Use this checklist to understand what skills and/or knowledge you need to demonstrate in your submission. All the criteria described in the Assessment checklist must be met. The assessor may ask questions after the task has been submitted.
