Treat Your Own Back App Project

Treat Your Own Back is an easy-to-follow book presents over 80 pages of education and clinically proven exercises. The simple and effective self-help exercises in Robin McKenzies Treat Your Own Back have helped thousands worldwide find relief from common low back and neck pain. This book helps the reader understand the causes and treatments, along with a system of exercises that can help relieve pain and prevent recurrence.

Treat Your Own Back Pty Ltd is managed by director (and author), Robin McKenzie. McKenzie currently sells the book and associated DVD’s through Amazon. A website containing short video and text instructions is also available. McKenzie wishes to tap into the mobile market developing an app designed to promote and grow the sales of the book, DVD’s and to promote self-help healing techniques.

You have been working for Body Care Software Inc. casually for the last three months in their mobile app development department. As a virtual team specialist, your company has applied for a tender to develop the app for Treat Your Own Back Pty Ltd. Due to the importance of this project the CEO of Body Care Software Inc, Dawn Bell, and the Director of Mobile Development Charlie Harris have both made this project a priority.

The initial investment in the project is estimated to be $120,000 in year 0 of the project, $13,000 in year 1, $18,000 in year 2, and $19,000 in year 3. Body Care Software Inc. requires a discount rate of 12%. It is anticipated project future cash inflow as follows (Years 0 to 3): $0, $130,000, $120,000, and $120,000, a total of $370,000

The goal of the project is to propose an app, which is optimised for iPhone and Android devices. The app should allow readers and potential readers to subscribe and pay for access a database of back injuries, a range of associated treatment plans, and book individual online consultations. Readers should be able to subscribe to the Treat Your Own Back newsletter and related upcoming events. There should be access charts detailing back anatomy, and videos showcasing all the treatment approaches. There should be a photo album for each practitioner. The app should provide users with an ability to provide an overall ranking of Treat Your Own Back in terms of quality of information and services. Management believes it will take about four months (16 weeks) with a budget of $170,000 for this important project.

Dawn Bell and Charlie Harris have formed a search committee to find the best candidate for managing the Treat Your Own Back App Project. After reviewing many strong candidates, they decided to appoint you, to put together the business case for this critical project. Your previous job was with a consultancy firm where you successfully implemented several android application development projects for medium sized enterprises, using virtual teams. Since this is a high priority project that should be completed in four months, they felt it was appropriate to get the best candidate to put together a quality business case and project management plan.

Bell and Harris propose to be joint project sponsors, and have handpicked Joel Goran, to be the main internal IT liaison and Maggie Lin to be the Treat Your Own Back liaison. They will let you as the new project manager form the rest of the project team if the tender bid is successful.

GENERALNOTESFORASSIGNMENTS

Assignments should usually incorporate a formal introduction, main points and conclusion, and will be fully referenced including a reference list.

The work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We strongly recommend you to refer to the Academic Learning Skills materials available in the Moodle. For details please click the link http://moodle.kent.edu.au/kentmoodle/course/view.php?id=5 and download the file “Harvard Referencing Workbook”. Appropriate academic writing and referencing are inevitable academic skills that you must develop and demonstrate.

We recommend a minimum of FIVE references, unless instructed differently by your lecturer. Unless specifically instructed otherwise by your lecturer, any paper with less than FIVE references may be failed. Work that includes sources that are not properly referenced according to the “Harvard Referencing Workbook” will be penalised.

Marks will be deducted for failure to adhere to the word count – as a general rule you may go over or under by 10% than the stated length.

GENERAL NOTES FOR REFERENCING

High quality work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We recommend you work with your Academic Learning Support (ALS) site (http://moodle.kent.edu.au/kentmoodle/course/view.php?id=5) available in Moodle to ensure that you reference correctly.

References are assessed for their quality. You should draw on quality academic sources, such as books, chapters from edited books, journals etc. Your textbook can be used as a reference, but not the lecturer notes. We want to see evidence that you are capable of conducting your own research. Also, in order to help markers determine students’ understanding of the work they cite, all in-text references (not just direct quotes) must include the specific page number/s if shown in the original. Before preparing your assignment or own contribution, please review this ‘YouTube’ video by clicking on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q0NlWcTq1Y

ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION:

Information Systems Project Plan

Tammy Nielsen is the CEO of Bendigo Tours & Travel. Bendigo Tours & Travel is one of the leading Tour Operators in Australia, providing comprehensive services for groups and individuals from and to the country. In your role as an IT project manager, you will help Bendigo Tours & Travel to develop a new information system.

Background

Bendigo Tours & Travel was first established in the year 2009 by qualified professionals with more than twenty years of experience in the tourism industry. Holding places, people and customs through professional guides, modern transportation, quality hotels, fine restaurants and other key vendors.

Company’s specialized departments offer a diversity of services. Every department works independently to provide the best service to customers, targeting their friendship and a long lasting relationship.

Bendigo Tours & Travel was recently nominated as the Leading Australian Travel Agency by the World Travel Awards for 4 years on a row 2015, 2016, & 2017. It is worth to mention that Bendigo Tours & Travel is the only company in Australia nominated to such prestigious award.

All services and departments are located in Melbourne, starting with the Management and

Administrative Department, Operational Department, Reservation Department, Product

Development, Sales & Marketing, Inbound, Outbound & Ticketing Departments, giving a competitive advantage by being all under one roof.

Tammy Nielsen recently asked you to work with him as an IT project manager. He wants you to help of Bendigo Tours & Travel manage the development of an information system that will support the company’s operations and future growth. At your initial meeting, he provided you with some background information and asked for your suggestions about how to begin. At your desk, you begin to review Bendigo Tours & Travel’s situation. The company’s head office located in busy Melbourne CBD.

Company’s services include EVERYTHING related with tourism, such as:

  • International Airline Reservations & Ticketing Worldwide hotel reservation ● Worldwide car rental.
  • Ground handling services
  • All over the year excursions and itineraries, (Adventures, Eco-Tours, Biblical Tours, Cruises,

Diving, Sea Resort Holidays, Ski Holidays, Relaxation & Spa Treatment Packages, & Tailored Made Tours)

  • Incentive, Special interest groups.
  • Conferences
  • Cruises world-wide & locally Camping services.
  • Meet & Assist services.
  • Limousine & VIP treatment specialists.
  • Free Ticket delivery

Tammy Nielsen believes that a new information system is required to support its business and information management needs. The new system would replace a mix of paper-based and fragmented computer systems. Tammy wishes an information system to support the airline reservations, hotel reservation, accounting and payroll functions of the company as well as a system to support the world-wide car rental, Computerized Reservation Order Entry (CROE) and a Decision Support System (DSS).

Tammy explains that they are looking for a system implemented by company’s hotels to allow guests to create secure online reservations. The hotel reservation system can be synced, not only with company’s current website, but also with Facebook. This allows guests to reserve rooms in a way that is convenient for them via social media.

In addition to allowing guests to book online directly, these reservation systems can also provide hotel operators with additional resources.

For example, a channel manager may be a part of the reservation system, giving hotel operators the chance to distribute their products and live availability simultaneously to their entire network of online agents.

An estimated cost for the project is $680,000. The company decide the discount rate of 6.5% for the financial analysis. The initial cost estimate also includes $45,000 for purchasing software and services from suppliers. Annual maintenance costs of $55,000 is also included. After three years of regular maintenance, the company also gets a 50% discount in the maintenance cost for the coming years. Projected benefits of this project would be approximately $320,000 per year.

Tammy who would sponsor this project which she thinks could be completed within 7 months and the new system will have a useful life of at least five years after the deployment. She also realise some potential issues like security, process reservations, payments and so on, that can cause serious issues in the success of this project. Tammy asked you and your team to manage the project.
