Case study scenario – PlanetG3

PlanetG3 is a small start-up company located in Sydney. They currently have eight employees and are planning to expand their office premises in the near future. PlanetG3 has consulted with your company XYZ Networking Services to setup their small office network.

As the Network Engineer at XYZ Networking Services, you are given the task of planning and designing the small office network for your client. You will be reporting to your project manager at XYZ Networking Services, Mark Myers (Email: markmyers@xyz.com, Phone: 0415987563)

Part 1: Client requirements

Preparation

For this assessment you will be using the XYZ Network Design Template – (XYZ_Network_Design_Document_Template.docx). This document template will be used to document your design for PlanetG3.

Open this document template and save it as PlanetG3_Network_Design_yourname.docx. You will be writing your PlanetG3 Network Design as you progress through the steps of this assessment.

Step 1.0

  1. Prepare a plan of action to develop your PlanetG3 Network Design. In this plan you need to identify at least four major goals that need to be achieved. Against each goal you need to identify the timeframe for when you aim to achieve the goal.

Hint: Read and reread this assessment in full so that you have a good idea of what is expected, and you can then identify important goals.

Step 1.1

Carefully read the information provided in the case study PlanetG3 Project Scenario (PlanetG3_Project_Scenario.pdf).

Based on this case study, identify and clarify the client’s requirements for PlanetG3’s small office network. Make sure you include the following information:

  1. Client background
  2. Existing equipment
  3. Connectivity requirements
  4. Software requirements
  5. Security requirements
  6. Purchasing of network equipment

Document these client requirements in your PlanetG3 Network Design under Part 1: Client requirements using the respective headings.

Part 2: Network design

Step 2.1

Identify the most suitable network design topology to meet the requirements of your client’s small office network. Your network design topology should be chosen from Star, Mesh, Bus, Ring and Tree.

Explain the reason for your choice of network design topology.

Use the following table for your answer. (Approx. 50 words)

Step 2.2

Develop and document your network design to meet the requirements of your client’s small office network. You should ensure you use your chosen network design topology (Step 2.1).

This network design must be drawn with a network design drawing tool Microsoft Visio or Draw.io.

Make sure that you include all devices identified in the PlanetG3 Project Scenario. Ensure that all devices and connections are labelled correctly in your diagram.

Part 3: Network technologies and components

Step 3.1

For your network design of your client’s small office network do each of the following:

  1. Identify the most suitable wired and wireless network technologies. You may choose from the following list:
    • Wired – Star, Bus, Hub, Token Ring, Mesh
    • Wireless – Ad Hoc, Infrastructure
  2. Identify the most suitable devices. You may choose from the following list:
    • Router, switch, server, hub, WAP, wireless repeater, all-in-one-router, modem, firewall, client PCs, network printers, NAS
  3. Identify the most suitable protocols. You may choose from the following list:
    • Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, WiMAX, Wifi
  4. Identify the most suitable network cables. You may choose from the following list:
    • Ethernet Cat 3, Ethernet Cat 5e, Ethernet Cat 6, Fibre Optic, Coaxial, Smart Serial
  5. Identify the most suitable connectors. You may choose from the following list:
    • RJ11, RJ12, RJ45, BNC, SC, ST, RS-232, V.35, IEEE1284
  6. Identify the most suitable network operating system (NOS). You may choose from the following list:
    • DOS, Android, Windows 2000, Windows 10 Pro, Windows Server 2019

You do not need to include existing client devices in your answer.

Step 3.2

In this step you will be researching and reviewing available network technologies, devices and protocols to ensure that they are most appropriate for your client requirements. To do this:

  1. Identify four client requirements critical for your network.
  2. Against each of these client requirements, list one of your selected technology(s), device(s), and/or protocol(s) that fulfil this need.
  3. Explain why you believe this is the most appropriate technology for the client requirement.

Step 3.3

In this step you will be preparing the technical documentation for your network layout to meet the client requirements and Australian standards. To do this:

  1. On the supplied PlanetG3 proposed office layout diagram (png), use a drawing tool to identify the location of the devices required for your PlanetG3 network design. Make sure you label each device on the diagram.
  2. Draw on the diagram the cabling or wireless connection that you would require to connect all end-user devices.
  3. Include your diagram in your PlanetG3 Network design under Part 4 Cabling requirements, 4.1 Network Layout.

Step 3.4

In this step you will be approximating the length of cable required to connect all end-user devices in your proposed network. To do this:

  1. Use the room measurements given on your Network layout (see Step 3.3) to approximately measure the length of each individual network cable that will be required to connect all end-user devices in your network.
  2. Record these individual measurements in the table provided in your PlanetG3 Network design under Part 4 Cabling requirements, 4.2 Cabling lengths. Make sure you identify which devices are involved in the individual cable connection. (e.g. PC1 to Switch1) Add rows to the table as required.
  3. Determine the total cable length required and include this in the table.

Hint: Print the PlanetG3 proposed office layout diagram and measure your lengths with a ruler or tape measure. Use the one metre (1 m) length on the right-hand side to determine your scale. Remember lengths only need to be approximately but be generous and round up to the nearest metre.

Part 4: Network costings

Step 4.1

In this step you need to source vendors and service suppliers to obtain specifications, check availability and cost of your identified network components. To do this:

  1. List all your identified network components that would need to be purchased by the client. This should include all devices and cover cabling requirements. You do not need to include the network operating system.
  2. Research online to find a suitable product for the network component, from online vendors and service suppliers. List the name of the product.
  3. List the specifications for the product which relate to the client requirements.
  4. Identify the vendor and/or service supplier.
  5. List the quantity of the network component you require for your network design. For cables include the total length of cable required as the quantity.
  6. List the unit cost of the product.
  7. Determine the total cost of the product.
  8. Show that this product is currently available by including the word “Yes” and linking it to the product’s web page. Your client should be able to click on this link to check if the product is currently available or not. This link could also be used to confirm the product’s specifications.
  9. Calculated the grand total cost for all identified network components by summing all the total costs for all network components. Round this value to the nearest dollar.

Document your answer in your PlanetG3 Network design under Part 4: Network costings, 4.1 Network component costings. Add rows to the table if needed.

Part 5: Client signoff

Step 5.1

You now need to ensure client sign-off for your proposed network design and associated components. To do this:

  1. In your PlanetG3 Network design under Part 5: Client signoff complete the details according to the scenario.
  2. Prepare an email to send to your client contact (Jason Brown), copying your project manager at XYZ Networking Services (Mark Myers) and your assessor.

In this email you need to:

  • Indicate who you are sending this email to and who you are copying in on the email.
  • Include an appropriate business subject line.
  • Request client sign-off for your proposed network design and associated components.
  • Include information for replying to the email to ensure that you get a correctly signed copy of the network design.
  • Write the email in a business-like manner.
