Negotiating cannot be confused with bargaining. Negotiations can take place in grievances and discipline situations relating to single employees, but bargaining normally takes place between the parties and trading in items in order to reach agreement. Formal bargaining normally takes place only once a year over the annual pay review but separate bargaining can occur over issues that arise during the year or over longer-term changes in working patterns or processes.
