10.2 Close Packing in Two Dimension
Let us consider the packing of hard spheres of equal size
(i) The spheres can be arranged side by side in a row (horizontal alignment) as shown below
(ii) The spheres are packed in such a way that the rows have both horizontal as were as vertical alignment. In this arrangement the spheres are found to form a square. This packing is called square close packing.
(iii) The spheres may also be packed in such a way that the second row are placed in the depression between spheres of first row. Similarly the spheres is the third row are placed in the depression between the spheres of second row and so on. This gives rise to a hexagonal closed packing of spheres.
