Modification of an exogenous compound by plant cells is called biotransformation.
The bioconversion reactions are catalyzed by enzymes present in plant cells. These reactions include esterification, oxidation, reduction, hydroxylation and glycosylation. The interest in biotransformation is mainly because the product generated by the process is more useful or valuable than the precursor used.
