Arithmetic of decimals is same as of the whole numbers and includes the same arithmetical operations. That is Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
Addition of Decimals is similar to that of whole numbers. Point to remember is, to line up the decimal numbers with their decimal point in same vertical line. It will be clearer with this example.
Example: add 1.342 and 2.765
1.342 + 2.765 = 4.107
Points to Remember
Example: add 2.321 and 1.2
2.321 + 1.200 = 3.521
Subtraction is also simple. The procedure is same as of addition.
Points to Remember
Example: Subtract 1.342 and 2.765
2.765 - 1.342 = 1.423
Example Subtract 2.321 and 1.2
2.321 - 1.200 = 1.121
Multiplication is done just as is done in whole numbers.
Steps for multiplication:
3.21 x 2.10 = 6.741
3.21 x 2.10 = 6 741
There are three digits after decimal point (two digits in first number and one digit in the second so 2+1=3 digits in total), so place the decimal point after three digits starting from right to left.
Therefore the answer is 6.741
