a) Innate or nonspecific immunity
Innate immunity is the basic resistance to disease that an individual has from the time of birth. It consists of four types of defensive barriers, anatomic, physiological, endocytic and inflammatory.
B) Acquired or specific immunity
The acquired immunity is initiated by the recognition of foreign antigen and represents the response of the immune system to this recognition. Its characteristic features are antigen specificity, diversity, immunologic memory, and recognition of self from non self antigens. It contains two major groups of cells lymphocytes and antigen presenting cells. The immune response is of two types namely humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. Humoral response involves antibodies whereas the cell mediated immune response involves types of lymphocytes, T- cells.
