12.9 Classification of Materials

All the substances, according to their resistivity and its variation with temperature, are divided into following four classes:

(1) Conductors

These have large number of free electrons (~1028/m3) and small resistivity

(2) Semiconductors

These have fewer conduction electrons and holes (~1016/m3). These have greater resistivity (~3 ´ 103 W m) as compared to metals.

(3) Insulators

These have practically no free electrons. These have very high resistivity.

(4) Superconductors

At low temperatures, the resistance of certain substances becomes exactly zero. These substances are called superconductors and phenomena superconductivity.
