It is the protection and enclosure of the food products for distribution, use, storage and sale. It serves various objectives such as:
a) Physical protection- It may protect the packaged objects from mechanical shock, vibration, electrostatic discharge, compression and temperature.
b) Barrier protection- Sometimes a barrier from oxygen, water vapour, dust is required.
c) Containment- Liquids, powders and granular materials need containments for efficiency reasons.
d) Information transmission- The package or product communicates how to use, transport, store and dispose the product.
e) Marketing- An attractive packaging of the products encourages the buyers to purchase the product.
f) Security- an important role of packaging is that it serves in reducing the risks of tempering, shipment, and package pilferation. It also helps in authentication and prevents counterfeiting. Packaging is mainly done on primary (package in direct contact with the content), secondary (is may be used to group a number of primary packages together), and tertiary basis (it is done for bulk handling, warehouse storage and shipping).
