In your report, be sure to include reference to:
how your style helps you act as a positive role model while completing day-to-day management roles and functions
There are six different leadership styles that are prominent in the field of business such as authoritarian, paternalistic, democratic, laissez-faire, transactional and transformational. Among the six, the leadership style that best describes me is the paternalistic leadership style. In case of paternalistic leadership style, I am responsible for providing support to my team members acting like a father figure. It is the role of the paternalistic leader to allow the team members to complete their task within the specified period so that self-confidence and efficiency of the team members are boosted. A paternalistic leader also implements the rewards and recognition system to encourage and motivate the team members and improve the overall efficiency of the team.
I believe that I play a positive role model and assist the team members to meet the day-to-day management roles and functions. In order to do so, I establish effective communication with the team members by identifying their skills, abilities, and competencies. Based on these factors, I delegate tasks and responsibilities to an employee who possesses appropriate skills and knowledge. In case of employee conflict, I act as a mediator engages in problem-solving so that none of the team members feel disrespected. Another important positive role that I play is to plan and organize tasks according to the employee’s capabilities so that the day-to-day management roles and functions are attained effectively and efficiently.
To show support for and commitment to organizational goals, I tend to set small targets for each of the team members. Since I am a paternalistic leader I show concern and support by guiding my team members so that they are able to attain the target. I believe it is important for a paternalistic leader to lead through commitment and building relationship which is done by developing the potential of the employees and encouraging the team for generation of new ideas and continuous improvement. On the other hand, proper training and development programs also helped me to support my team members and encourage them to input substantial amounts of discretionary effort so that they contribute to the organizational goals.
One of the best ways to positively and professionally interact with the team members is through verbal communication. A face-to-face interaction between the leaders and the team members is found to be effective as the new ideas and solutions to conflicts are generated during this communication process. It is also important for a paternalistic leader to provide information about the organization to the team members and ensure that the team members are well informed about the task instructions and directions. I religiously conduct weekly meetings to assess the team progress and allow the team members to share their concern and problems so that appropriate solutions come up. Apart from the team meetings, I engage in an ice-breaking session for the new team members, which provides them the confidence and ease to work with new members.
For a paternalistic leader, task delegation is important to maintain the team performance. One of the methods that I implement in case of task delegation is by accurately analyzing the areas of employee accountability and considers the maturity and skill level of the members so that the appropriate task is delegated to the efficient member. In doing so, I also consider the aspect of progressive assignment of tasks which ultimately builds the confidence and competence of the members. Within this method, a paternalistic leader ensures that the objectives and performance criteria of the task are explained to the members so that they are able to recognize what is expected out of them. If any team members lack certain qualities or skills, as a paternalistic leader, I enroll them in the training and mentoring session to ensure that they are able to acquire the desired skills and knowledge. This also helps in optimization of the task delegation to the potential employees. Barriers in task delegation are addressed by fostering a workplace culture that ensures support and trust to the employees so that guidelines are laid in case of new tasks.
Monitoring and evaluating of the employees are conducted using the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which are set based on the communicated standards of the organization for which the team works. As a paternalistic leader, I engage in formal performance evaluation through the individual report. Each of the team members is acquainted with feedbacks and the leader ensures that immediately problems are addressed. The paternalistic leader ensures that effective coaching and mentoring sessions are carried on so that continuous learning environment within work is created. I ensure that personnel, time and equipment of tasks are available to the employees so that learning needs of the employees would be addressed in the quarterly coaching and mentoring session. The paternalistic leader also makes use of the rewards and recognition system to motivate employees. In this regards, I engage in Annual Bonuses which involves offering financial compensation to the best-performing employee of that year.Trainer Comments
