Adequacy reflects a diet that provides sufficient energy and enough of all the nutrients to meet the needs of healthy people (Eleanor Noss Whitney, 2019, p. 20). A diet may also be inadequate in one category and excessive in another. A healthy diet is balanced. A balanced diet contains combinations of foods to provide proper proportions of nutrients(Burwell & Vilsack, 2015).

In my experience, the two biggest factors impacting nutritional intake include but are not limited to the financial means and the accessibility/convenience to a successful diet. In the United States, about 48 million individuals live in households that experience food insecurity, which occurs when access to nutritionally adequate and safe food is limited or uncertain.
