Pre-Algebra ALL Vocab

Rational Numbers : Any number that can be written as a fraction; a repeating or terminating decimal

Irrational Numbers : Any real number which cant be expressed as a fraction of two integers; non-repeating, non-terminating decimal. It may have a pattern.

Perfect Square : A rational number whose square root is a whole number

Terminating Decimal : A decimal number that ends or terminates

Least Common Multiple : The smallest multiple that two or more numbers have in common

Perfect Cube : A rational number whose cube root is a whole number.

Exponent Product Rule : When multiplying two powers that have the same base, you can add the exponents.

Exponent rule for negative exponents : "elevator rule" across the fraction barmoves term and changes the sign of the exponent

Quadrant 4 :

Exponent power rule :

slope : the steepness of a line on a graph; change in y over change in x; rise over run

slope-intercept form : y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept of the line.

negative slope : The slope of a line going up to the left

system of linear equations : 2 or more equations that are linear and in the same variables

Vertical Line Test : Used to determine if the graph is a function; if only one intersection, graph is a function.

initial value : the starting amount or y-intercept of the graph

Rotation : A transformation in which a figure is turned around a point

congruent figures : Figures that have the same size and shape

Dilation : A transformation that changes the size of an object, but not the shape.

scale factor : the ratio used to enlarge or reduce similar figures

corresponding angles : lie on the same side of the transversal and in corresponding positions

alternate interior angles : Interior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal

Exterior angle of a triangle : An angle that is part of a linear pair to an interior angle.

Pythagorean Theorem : a²+b²=c²
