You will:

• Be given the underpinning knowledge required to fulfil each skill

To be able to truly assess the application of your knowledge and how safely you will perform your clinical skills in the healthcare environment your trainer and assessor must be sure that you will consider your client as a whole and multi-faceted person, not just a task or aspect of care.

Throughout the course you will be assessed on many different skills. Keep in mind that even though you may have been assessed earlier on skills such as handwashing, documentation, specimen collection, communication etc., you are still expected to include these aspects in scenarios later in the course even if you have been deemed satisfactory in these overall skills.

SCEI’S PATHOLOGY CLINICAL SKILLS LABORATORY GUIDELINES

The pathology clinical skill laboratory (Lab) has been designed to maximise your learning and has a large amount of expensive equipment. There is also equipment, that if used incorrectly or carelessly, can cause harm.

SCEI attempts to maintain a latex free environment, however, it is imperative that anyone with a latex allergy notify the educator immediately.

No cell phones, pagers or electronic devices are allowed in the Lab.

All users of the Lab are expected to display professional conduct at all times, this includes punctuality so as to ensure all instructions/directions are heard and understood.

Students will likely be an observer of other students’ performance during the simulation exercises. Students will be held accountable for maintaining a safe respectful environment and maintaining confidentiality regarding the performance of other students in the Lab.

You are expected to dispose of sharps in the appropriate sharps containers

and notify the educator if these are full.

IV Lines and syringes (unless attached to a sharp), non-glass ampules/

Blood products are simulated in the lab so this should not occur but it is important that even in a simulated experience you wear PPE (personal protective equipment i.e. gloves, gowns and goggles) so that you are demonstrating correct procedure.

Exposure is an injury that involves direct contact with a body fluid (i.e. blood) where there is compromised skin integrity (open wounds, abrasion or dermatitis), or there is direct contact with mucous membrane (eyes/mouth).

• Remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed/injured area thoroughly with soap & water.

• Flush mucous membrane with large amounts of water

• Complete an incident report.

Step 3. Ongoing support

o Hep B Antibodies

An injury is any incident that causes harm to a person during their participation in work and/or training activities with SCEI.

A hazard is any potentially dangerous situation within the work/study environment.
