absolute value : the distance a number is from zero

equation : Math phrase with numbers, operation and equal sign.

expression : math phrase with numbers, operations and NO equal sign.

descending order : arranged in order from greatest to least

ascending order : arranged in order from least to greatest

identity property of multiplication : the product of any number and 1 is the original number

associative property : The way in which numbers are grouped does not change their sum or product

proportion : A statement that two ratios are equal

origin : the point (0,0) where the x-axis and the y-axis intersect in a coordinate plane

area : the amount of space inside a 2-D shape

whole number : the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.. ... No fractions, no decimals, no negatives

mixed number : a number made up of a whole number and a fraction

denominator : bottom number in a fraction; the divisor

x-axis : the horizontal line on a graph

y-axis : the vertical line on a graph

mode : the number which appears most often in a set of numbers. Good to use with categorical data, or if there is a piece of data that happens much more frequently than the others.

range : the difference between the lowest and highest values.

circumference : the distance around a circle

area of a circle : A=πr 2

variable : a letter used to represent an unknown number

term : It is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.Terms are separated by + or − signs

converting decimals to percents : move the decimal two places to the right and add % sign.

converting percents to decimals : move the decimal two places to the left and remove the % sign

adding integers with different signs : find the difference and take the sign of the integer with the largest absolute value

subtracting integers : 1. Follow 2. Keep/change/changeThen follow the rules for adding integers.

multiplying decimals : 1. Multiple numbers as if whole numbers. 2. Then count total number of decimal places in the factors and add them (Ex: 3.77 and 2.8 has three total decimal places)3. Add the total number of decimal places to product, counting left to right (Ex: 377 x 28 = 10556 --> 10.566 final answer)

dividing decimals : 1. move the decimal to the right in the divisor, making it a whole number2. move the decimal the same number of places in the dividend and bring to the top in the quotient 3. divide normally

multiplying or dividing a whole number by a fraction : place the whole number over 1 and then follow rules for multiplying or dividing fractions

multiplying fractions by a whole number using models : 1. count the number of models. (This will be your whole number).2. count how many pieces are shaded out of the number of pieces (This will be your fraction.3. Place the whole number over 1 and multiply it by the fraction.

one step equations : solve by isolating the variable. This is done by doing the inverse (opposite) operation to both sides of the equation

congruent angles : two angles that have the same measure ( ∠C ≅ ∠F)

circumference of a circle formula : C=2πr or C=πd

area of a triangle formula : area of a triangle = 1/2bh

circle graph (pie chart) : used to show how a fixed quantity is broken down into parts
