Not medication codes observation codes using the umls terminology browsers
Week 5 Lab 5a: Terminology in medical records
Lab Overview
The goal of this week’s two labs is to encourage you to explore
standardized terminologies in healthcare.
•Upon logging in, you will see a page with four main links to different terminology systems: Unified Medical Language System, Value Set Authority Center, RxNorm, and SNOMED CT
![]() |
|---|
•Visit each of the four systems, and read through the description of the information in the system.
•Identify at least 10 different codes for concepts you find in the medical record. Try to find codes for as many different types of concepts as possible (e.g., not 10 medication codes or 10 observation codes) using the UMLS terminology browsers. There is some overlap between these browsers, so you might be able to find these codes through multiple sources.
oWrite up your findings matching the information elements in the medical records to codes in the standardized terminologies.
4.What else you did you find or notice during this exercise?
5.Did the lab raise questions you haven’t yet found answers for?
