Individual Report
The Greater London Authority (GLA) has responsibility for the 33 boroughs of London2. They oversee several initiatives, such as the London Food Board3, which have been designed to help improve the provision of food across London. The GLA is in the process of developing new policies for food provision and the allocation of resources to food projects across London. They have commissioned you to investigate the prevalence food poverty across the London boroughs. They will use the findings of your analysis to support their policy development. They are primarily interested in the prevalence of food poverty amongst children. Childhood poverty and obesity, which are indicators of food poverty, are known to be linked to serious diet-related health problems in later life.
Data has been collected relating to the 33 London boroughs. Childhood food poverty is a complex issue, with a lot of inter-related and underlying factors. Therefore, first of all, the GLA would like you to provide a general analysis of the dataset. They do not have the in-house skills to analyse a dataset such as this, so would like you to use visual displays and descriptive statistics to summarise the dataset. In addition to this, they are also interested in three key issues.
1 QBA assessment = QBA1 Exam (50%) + QBA2 group task (5%) + QBA2 report (45%)
2 See for more information about the Boroughs. Note that the 33 boroughs includes the City of London which has few residents and is primarily a commercial district.3
The main body of the report should be no longer than 10 pages5. The report should be written for a manager in the Greater London Authority and should be mainly discursive. Itmay include tables and graphs from SPSS, but only if they enhance your discussion of the problem. Most SPSS outputs should be presented in an appendix, but each piece of output that is included should be explained in the appendix and referenced appropriately from the main body of the report.
Your report should include the following:
| % of mark | |
|---|---|
| (5%) | |
| (15%) | |
| 20% each (60%) | |
| Overall conclusion and recommendations communicating your findings to a manager at the GLA | (10%) |
|
(10%) |
5 The 10 page limit assumes that the text will be “normal” size (i.e. 10-12pt) and single spaced. It does not include the title page, contents page, reference list or appendices.
