Running head: DEFINITION OF FAMILY 1
Assignment 1: Definition of Family

To assist my definition of family, I chose three images that accurately reflect what I think the definition of family is. The first image I chose is a multi-racial family. I think that a family is made based on the bond, no matter the persons race or culture. In this case, based off of the picture they have a strong bond. They also appear very happy which symbolizes the meaning of family. I believe that getting raised in a multi-racial family has many benefits. There will be a strong sense of values and beliefs in the family which can lead to children becoming more accepting of diverse cultures and religions. This supports my idea of family because learning and growth are being taken place. This directly correlates with the changing demographics of Canadian families. One demographic is race, and according to Statistics Canada couples in mixed unions have increased almost two percent from 2001 to 2011. I also picked this image because it depicts a “nuclear” family but with a multi-raced family. A nuclear family is the traditional definition of a family, but my image is a bit different, Talcott Parsons and Robert Bales (1956) defined the nuclear family as containing a male adult, a female adult, and at least one child to be the social norm. I think that the social cultural changes have contributed to the experience of family because families are becoming more diverse. All members of the family are learning about different cultures and values easily compared to marrying in the same culture. This situation is interesting because my friend is married into a different culture. There are some cultural traits that are very similar and some very different which makes multi-cultural marriages interesting and provide a learning experience.

In-Text Citations
According to Razi Nadeem and Ezekiel Tewes (2006a), the names or titles of journals, books, CDs, television and radio programs, plays, and operas are italicized. Names or titles of articles, episodes of television programs, shows of radio programs, poems, chapters, website articles, and songs are surrounded by quotation marks. Dr. John Wright confirms in his article “Foxes Forever” that each word in a title in the text begins with a capital letter, except for a, the, in, etc., but in the references, article and book titles are lowercased—except for the first word, the first word after a colon, and proper nouns (2006). If an article does not have an author, use aDEFINITION OF FAMILY 4
Et al. for Three or More Authors
When referring to material that comes from three, four, or five authors, include all of the authors’ last names in the first reference. Subsequently, use just the first author’s last name followed by the words et al. Et al. is a Latin abbreviation for et alii, meaning “and others.” APA italicizes words written as words. When a work has six or more authors, in the paper body, cite only the last name of the first author, followed by et al. (Bryn et al., 2009, pp. 6-7). For seven or fewer authors in the references, write out authors’ last names with first- and middle-name initials,DEFINITION OF FAMILY 5

[The first two heading levels get their own paragraph, as shown here. Headings 3, 4, and 5 are run-in headings used at the beginning of the paragraph.]

Note: [Place all tables for your paper in a tables section, following references (and, if applicable, footnotes). Start a new page for each table, include a table number and table title for each, as shown on this page. All explanatory text appears in a table note that follows the table, such as this one. Use the Table/Figure style, available on the Home tab, in the Styles gallery, to get the spacing between table and note. Tables in APA format can use single or 1.5 line spacing. Include a heading for every row and column, even if the content seems obvious. A default table style has been setup for this template that fits APA guidelines. To insert a table, on the Insert tab, click Table.]
