The relationship between fsmax and the normal force FN is
2. fs,max=μsFN, where μs is a constant, called the coefficient of static friction.

Once the object begins to slide, the kinetic friction will take over the static friction. The kinetic friction will take over the static friction. The kinetic frictional force between the two surfaces is given by:
3. fk=μkFN, where k is the coefficient of kinetic (sliding) friction
If the sliding takes place at the constant speed, Newton’s First Law can be applied to the system.

below the power push button should light up.

8. Put a mass in the Friction Tray. Connect the Friction Tray to the Force Sensor using the string.

9. Go to page of “Measurement” and click “RECORD” button on the bottom of the screen.

14. Repeat steps 8 to 13 with five different normal forces for the friction tray that was selected.

15. When finished inputting all the data in the table in “Analysis 2” page, you will see data set of static and kinetic in the graph next to the table.

QUESTIONS:
1. Based on your measurement to find the friction coefficients for three friction trays with different surfaces, which tray has the largest friction coefficient? Is this consistent with your experiences?

It did not affect the coefficient of static friction or the coefficient of kinetic friction. Both static and kinetic friction coefficients depended only on the nature of the two surfaces in contact with each other, which are independent of the normal force exerted between those two surfaces. What pattern do you notice between the values of coefficients of static and kinetic 4.
