Avoid the use of “we”
Use “I” instead of “we” when answering interview questions.
Examples:
- We (I) showered patients.
- We (I) recorded fluid intake on the fluid balance chart.
- We (I) answered call bells in a timely manner.
The word “I” spotlights:
- Your achievements: "I took responsibility for ...", "I created
..."
- Your contribution: "In my role as a student nurse, I ...", "I was
involved in ..."
- Your strengths: "Being goal-oriented, I always ...", "An empathetic
person, I ..."
The word “I” tells your career story and the specific skills YOU bring
to the job.
Could I use “I” when talking about collaboration/teamwork?
When answering questions about collaboration or teamwork, it is
appropriate to use both “I” and “We”, where relevant.
For instance:
- "Our team was given the task of ... My role in the team related to
..."
- "We worked on ... I contributed by ..."
- "We liaised with the multidisciplinary team to ... Specifically, I
collaborated with ..."
Action verbs
- Are powerful verbs that can help you strongly reiterate your
achievements.
- Direct attention to the subject (the one performing the action).
Consider these sentences:
1. I was asked to perform wound care.
2. My supervising Registered Nurse instructed me to educate patients and
family members about treatment and care plans.
The highlighted sentences have more IMPACT! They clearly indicate that
YOU did the actions.
- Avoid waffle! Use action verbs to emphasize your capability and
convince interviewers that YOU are the right person for the job!
Example:
Answer:
As a student nurse, I always strive to empower patients. I once
encountered a difficult patient when I was on clinical placement. I
found it difficult to get the young woman I was caring for, to cooperate
with me. She refused to take her medication and wanted to be discharged.
Understanding that patient empowerment is essential for recovery, I
gently asked the patient her reason for not wanting to take the
medication and explained the importance of the medication. By spending
time with the patient, I effectively built a therapeutic relationship
with her, making her feel valued, supported, and part of the
decision-making process. Gradually, the patient settled down and started
cooperating with me. This demonstrates my ability to empower patients,
enabling them to gain a sense of purpose and meet health goals.
Descriptive language
Use descriptive language such as adjectives and adverbs to sell your
skills!
- Adjectives (in bold) describe nouns: Therapeutic relationship,
Holistic care, Quick decisions.
- Adverbs (in bold) give more information about verbs: Observe patients
closely, Effectively maintain safety and quality standards, Carefully
review patient records.
