C206 Task 1

Jaime Vaudrin

The leader I have chosen for the purpose of this task is Nancy Hilton, chief nursing officer of St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Nancy has been in this position for more than 20 years.

Nancy is known for taking an active role in deciding the composition of the nursing staff at St. Lucie Medical, including individually interviewing every member of the nursing staff before they are hired.

Nancy encourages the nursing staff to function as a team- a team of which she is an integral part.

She attends interviews for each member of the nursing staff before they are hired, and upon hire continues to address them by name. She also attends weekly nursing huddles on every nursing unit to ensure that she is aware of the successes and struggles of each unit.

with his customers about the product, and the constraints of the NDA. The deontologist would reason that all surgeries have the potential for potentially deadly side-effects, regardless of the replacement joint used. The NDA would prevent the deontologist from disclosing proprietary information. This may or may not include the results of clinical trials. It is my belief that based upon a deontological perspective, the potential side effect would not be disclosed.

The consequentialist, rather than rules, would be bound ethically by the consequences of any course of action. The consequences in this scenario are:

b. Customer purchases joints and many patients see the benefits of the cheaper joint.

The consequentialist, like the deontologist will likely reason that all surgeries have the potential for possibly deadly infection as a complication. They will most likely attempt to remain within the confines of the NDA while disclosing the side effect.

If I reveal this information, will I get into trouble and possibly even lose my job?

This question represents postconventional moral development. Postconventional moral

development is based upon an individual’s ability to make decisions based upon their personal beliefs in

If I keep quiet will I get some sort of reward?

This is preconventional moral development. It represents obedience in exchange for some

over sensibility. According to the ELI, my commitment to careful thinking provides considerable guidance

as I seek the truth. I strive to apply universal principles to every facet of my life.

I think that the ELI got my preferred lens right in my professional life. However, in my personal life, I feel that I value equality over autonomy. I am an empath, and I find myself frequently feeling for people who are struggling to find equality on multiple fronts. I don’t really feel that everything is the responsibility of the individual, but rather the responsibility of the community as a whole. I do feel that I have the responsibility lens no matter the scenario.

D2. Primary values and classical virtues

D2a. Compare two primary values and one classical virtue with three of the top five values from the Clarifying Your Values exercise.

The first of the three values from the Clarifying Your Values exercise that I chose was
competence. This means that I have the ability to complete tasks successfully or efficiently. This value relates closely to my classical virtue of prudence. I act with thoughts and care for the future. I put a lot of thought and work into each of my actions, with the ultimate goal of reaching a future goal. I am competent because I act with prudence and forethought.

D4. Using the ethical lens

My ethical lens is responsibility. The ELI described me as one who uses personal reasoning and rationality to make decisions. I am also a prudent leader. I am very thoughtful of the future and plan ahead where possible. While I plan to use these very important tools, the ELI also brought to light their shortcomings. Being reminded that, while rationality has its place, I must remember to also have and use empathy. Each decision has a set of consequences that affect both myself, as well as others and I must be mindful of that.
