SEL Snapshot: Read about the purpose and intention of the Start Student activity. Describe the process you will use with your students (identify your grade level) to celebrate the uniqueness and likeness of each child’s identity.

Think About It: After view the second and third videos in the SEL in Action section, what practices will you apply to provide opportunities for students to examine their self-identity as a person, as a learner and as a contributor to the classroom, school and community?

After viewing the video, reading the quotes, and reviewing the snapshot, the core SEL values I will apply in my classroom to recognize and address culture and identity, through my teaching and my student’s learning is Relationship Skills.

Relationship building skills give student the ability to establish and maintain healthy, trustworthy and supportive relationships throughout their life. Relationship building skills will also help the students to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups. This will also give them the capacities to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed (Aguilar, C., & Bridges, C., n.d.).
