University of Maryland Global Campus

Executive Summary

Introduction

This white paper is prepared to help the individual user or organizations who planning to move from their on-premises infrastructure to cloud solution. There are so many challenges and issues have to be faced by a user while moving their infrastructure towards cloud. Because of less knowledge of the services and working (establishment) process offered by so many cloud service providers. This is the situation which is regularly faced by so many users before the introduction of google, amazon web service and many other cloud service providers who offer a range of services with detailed documentations and online help for each conditional deployment. This white paper provides a detailed research on the issues, generally faced by the user while this movement, to avoid failure of deployment. There are some best practices also to help a new user in this regard.

AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE

  • Is the audience for the white paper is clear

At the same time, many businesses are looking for better ways to migrate their existing applications to a cloud-based infrastructure so that they, too, can enjoy the same advantages seen with greenfield application development.

One of the key differentiators of AWS infrastructure services is its flexibility. It gives businesses the freedom of choice to choose the programming models, languages, operating systems and databases they are already using or familiar with. As a result, many organizations are moving existing applications to the cloud today.

Previous approaches

New findings

Below are the details of each model –

Public cloud – this cloud model is available to be used for public and all the resources and data is stored and managed by a third-party. The major benefit of this model is that the user will no need to deploy and maintain their in-house infrastructure and can use cloud’s virtual infrastructures and pay per use basis. It is best suited for the companies which is not concerned with privacy issues. This model is highly scalable, provide maximum up time with minimum cost.
Private cloud – in private cloud model, it is available for particular organization or user. All the infra is maintained on a designated private network and all the deployed services are intended to be used by the owner. It has vast opportunities to customize the infrastructure according to our requirements and it is suitable for the user or organizations, who want a separate space for critical business operations. As the core benefit of this model, it is more scalable, high secure with privacy and reliability but charges a lot.
Community cloud – it is mostly similar to the private cloud model where one organization develop a server and related infrastructure and other similar organizations will use that resources. These organizations have similar privacy, security and performance needs so that this architecture will help them with enhanced efficiency with centralized implementation and management of infra. This approach will help in reducing cost, easy sharing of data with security, reliability and maintained privacy.
Hybrid cloud – this deployment model offers many best features as compared to all other models. One can customize and add the feature from rest of the three models, according to their needs. It offers better control with high security to facilitate data and software or application portability in a cost-effective way. This model offer privacy, flexibility, scalability with minimal pricing.

  • Major benefits of cloud migration – a cloud computing solution offer so many benefits with fully managed and well secured environment. When working with cloud computing, it feels like we are working on our own system with even far better performance, security, availability and reliability (Rutkin, 2020).

Here are some benefits of moving our on-premises infrastructure to cloud computing –

  • At today, migrating to a cloud solution is more easy approach. This can be done within few days with a strategic planning of implementation. This offer faster deployment and reduce the downtime of business or services.

  • It enhances collaboration among employees within an organization using cloud services. By using automatic syncing, real time sharing of resources, help increasing efficiency and collaboration between workers.

  • The most common issue is incompatibility while moving service and applications and select the new platform to deploy them.

  • Security of the company data is also a big concern. They have to deal with loss of data, infection or cyber-attack like situations.

  • One has to prepare cloud migration strategy and work according to it.

  • Create and follow a cloud governance framework with clearly listing of policies.

  • Always use monitoring features to monitor resources.

  • Whenever needed, take the help of cloud service provider, from their support team or engineers.
