Welcome and Instructor Information

What's Exciting About This Course
Math is an exciting course that can be applied to everyday life. We can be better at critical thinking and problem solving, which are essential tools to creating solutions.

My Personal Welcome
Welcome to MATH 0324. I am delighted that you have chosen this course. One of my passions is knowing how much we can relate math concepts to real-world applications, and I can hardly wait to pass that on. I will present the information in the most exciting way I know to grasp the concepts and apply them now and hopefully throughout your life; as you read and wrestle with new ideas and facts that may challenge you, I'm available to support you. The fastest way to reach me is by my HCC email. The best way to discuss issues is in person, and I am available before and after class to tackle the questions.

Course Overview

Basic Concepts for Business Math is a developmental math course whose topics include: An intro to real numbers including the order of operations with integers, decimals and fractions; An intro to algebra including the simplification and solving of linear equations in one variable along with the use and manipulation of formula; Graphs of linear equations in two variables, slopes, and intercepts; An intro to functions with a focus on function notation using linear, quadratic, and exponential equations; Polynomials including their addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic factoring; and Linear inequalities in one variable and in two variables.

Requisites

Core Curriculum Objectives (CCOs)

Critical Thinking: to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information.

Communication Skills: to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives

2. Use symbolic representations to solve problems. This includes manipulating formulas, solving equations, and graphing lines. 3. Build the foundational mathematical skills that will enable a student to successfully complete a college level mathematics course.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs)

2. Solve mathematics of finance problems, including the computation of interest, annuities, and amortization of loans. 3. Apply basic matrix operations, including linear programming methods, to solve application problems.

4. Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and application of those techniques, including expected value, to solve problems.

2. Be able to solve systems of linear equations using Gauss-Jordan elimination.

3. Be able to add, subtract, and multiply matrices.

9. Use the graphical method for solving a linear programming problem.

10. Use the simplex method for solving standard maximization and standard minimization problems. 11. Be able to perform the basic set operations.

The Developmental Mathematics Department has specific expectations for calculators, proctored exams and grading policies. Refer

A grade of incomplete ( I ) will not be given in this course

Missed Assignments/Make-Up Policy

MATH 0324 is a co-requisite support course for MATH 1324. Students should be aware that sections of these courses are LINKED. Therefore, developmental math students who enroll in Math 0324 must also enroll in the linked section of Math 1324 (in the same semester).

Developmental students must maintain satisfactory attendance in BOTH Math 0324 and Math 1324. If a developmental student withdraws or drops from one course in the corequisite pair, then he/she will be dropped from the other linked course. Co-

Students should not engage in disruptive activities while in the classroom. Any conduct deemed annoying or bothersome to the academic atmosphere, such as cell phone or consistent talking during instructional delivery, will not be tolerated. Any student engaging in such activities will be asked to leave the classroom. As you want to be respected, respect others.

Instructor’s Course-Specific Information

Tests must be taken on the scheduled day. No MAKE-UP test will be given for any reason.

I will drop the lowest grade of the four exams from your final grade calculation.

The use of electronic devices by students in the classroom is up to the discretion of the instructor. Any use of such devices for the purposes other than student learning is strictly prohibited unless authorized as an appropriate ADA accommodation from the ADA Counselor.

Faculty Statement about Student Success

Participating in class activities

There is no short cut for success in this course; it requires reading (and probably re-reading) and studying the material using the course objectives as a guide.

current or first previous major release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Because it's built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.

Canvas only requires an operating system that can run the latest compatible web browsers. Your computer operating system should be kept up to date with the latest recommended security updates and upgrades.

The grade of D is not allowed in developmental math courses. The grade of FX is given when a student fails due to lack of 6 of 12
