Assessment Task 2 – Project

Assessment type: Project

The Assessment Task is due on the date specified by your trainer. Any variations to this arrangement must be approved in writing by your trainer.

  • You must respond to all questions and submit them to your Trainer/Assessor.

  • You will receive your feedback within two weeks. You will be notified by your Trainer/Assessor following NEI Policies and Procedures.

What the student can expect to learn by studying this unit of competency
  • Use command line tools

  • Use hardware tools

It applies to individuals who apply technical and specialised knowledge to monitor security and resolve issues for the network.

More information can be found at https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/ICTSAS517

Training and assessment resources required for this unit of competency
  • Access to other learning materials such as textbooks and Online Library

The resources required for these assessment tasks also include:

  • Network monitoring tool

  • Network penetration tool

  • Students will receive a 'satisfactorily completed' (S) or 'not yet satisfactorily completed (NS) result for each individual unit assessment task.

  • Final unit result will be recorded as competency achieved/competent (C) or competency not yet achieved/not yet competent (NYC).

Additional Information

Feedback to student

  • Be provided for each Unit Assessment task

  • Guide students to adapt and adjust their learning strategies

For more information, please refer to NEI Student Handbook

How your trainer/assessor will assess your work?

  • Once all assessment tasks allocated to this Unit of Competency have been undertaken, trainer/assessor will complete an Assessment plan to record the unit outcome. The outcome will be either Competent (C) or Not Yet Competent (NYC).

Assessment Task 2 - Project

Scenario:

Task Description Frequency
Server updates Ensuring that the updates are reviewed first to determine if they will cause any issues and then applied if not. Daily
Server anti-virus Ensuring that anti-virus is running and that the latest virus definition have been downloaded, and scanned against Daily
Server disk capacity Ensuring that the server has sufficient storage to operation efficiently Daily
Data backups Ensuring that the organisations data is backed up, and stored offsite Daily
User audit Ensuring that Active Directory user settings are correct, and that users that have left the organisation are removed Weekly
License audit Ensuring that the software licensing is correct. Weekly
Firewall audit Ensuring that Firewall logs are checked for suspicious activity Daily
Security auditing Ensuring that you response to any automated security alerts When they occur
Password security Ensuring that strong password protection is enforced for users including that the user has changed their password every 3 months Weekly
Penetration testing Ensuring that a penetration test is undertaken to find security issues Weekly
Desktop updates Ensuring that desktop updates for operating systems, and applications are pushed to the desktops successfully Daily
Desktop anti-virus Ensuring that anti-virus is running and that the latest virus definition have been pushed to the desktop, and that the desktop has a scan scheduled Daily
Desktop support Ensuring that you support network users when they raise support issues. When they occur
  • Server

  • LAN (Local Area Network)

The Network Administrator wants to use a range of command-line tools in a Windows environment to ensure that you can use them correctly. This includes the ping, ipconfig, and netstat commands. You will be expected to use these tools as part of your troubleshooting duties after the orientation phase has been completed.

The assessor will play the role of the Network Administrator for this task and will supply any further details required to undertake the tests such as the server IP address of the network.

  1. Execute the ipconfig command to get details of all TCP/IP network configurations on the device

  2. Execute the ipconfig command to release the IP address for the device

Performance criteria checklist for unit assessment task:

The Network Administrator has replicated a support request for a user that is having difficulty connecting to the network. They have asked you to test whether there is an issue with the Ethernet cable that is connected to the Network Interface Card (NIC) in the device to rule this out as the connectivity issue. The purpose of this test is to ensure that you can use a hardware tool correctly and to required safety standards. This will be one of your expected duties after the orientation phase has been completed.

The assessor will play the role of the Network Administrator for this task.

You should undertake this task in the presence of an assessor as evidence that you have completed this task.

Performance criteria checklist for unit assessment task:

Trainer/ Assessor to complete
Assessment activities to be completed
Resources required for the unit assessment task
  • A number of hardware testing tools which must include a cable tester

Does the candidate meet the following criteria Yes No Trainer/Assessor Comments
Has identified the correct tool to undertake the test
Uses the tool in a correct manner and to safety standards
Has analysed the results of the test correctly

Activity 3: (Hardware usage 2)

  1. Identify which hardware tool you will use for this task.

  2. Use the tool you have identified to correctly test the motherboard ensuring that you follow work health and safety requirements during its usage.

The Network Administrator has asked you to use a network monitoring on the live network to determine that you can use the tool correctly to determine possible vulnerabilities and security issues with the network, and that you can analysis the monitoring results. This will be one of your expected duties after the orientation phase has been completed.

The assessor will play the role of the Network Administrator for this task, and will specify what networking monitoring tool you will use for this task.

  1. Analyse the result to determine possible vulnerabilities for the network. If any vulnerabilities are identified, specify to the assessor orally how you could go about isolating or resolving the security issue.

You should undertake this task in the presence of an assessor as evidence that you have completed this task.

Trainer/ Assessor to complete
Assessment activities to be completed
Resources required for the unit assessment task
  • Windows Server network

  • Network Monitoring software

Does the candidate meet the following criteria Yes No Trainer/Assessor Comments
Identified and successfully accessed the network monitoring tool
Orally specified the main functions of the network monitoring tool
Monitored the network using the network monitoring software
Analysed the network monitoring test results, and identified potential vulnerabilities and a method to isolate or resolve the issue.

For this task you need to:

  1. Identify and access the network penetration tool that the Network Administrator wants you to use.
