Maintaining a Safe Environment Assignment

Keeping children safe in the environments they play in is a challenging task as it encompasses all areas where children learn and play. Parameters for keeping the physical environment safe encompass many aspects from the types of materials products used & organized to the way in which routines are organized and handled. This assignment is designed to help strengthen your know-how in what is required to check and maintain a healthy and safe environment. Theory from Unit 7 will also support students in completing this assignment. Students will review the slide show and then complete the questions within the assignment. The questions require students to reflect on different aspects of promoting safety in an ECLC environment.

Students will need to reflect, think critically and problem solve. The final question deals with the student's ability to apply a social-ecological perspective to a health promotion issue.

4. SLIPS, TRIPS, & FALLS are the most common issues that can occur in centres. Review the scenario and respond to the questions below.

In the school age room, the children enter the classroom, sit on a carpeted group area as the educator takes attendance & greets the children. The activities that are available at each of the different room areas is pointed out for the children. Each child then states where they would like to start their time. On this day, Jacob selects the block area. He goes to the block area. The block area contains many different boxes of blocks on the shelves. There is a large, heavy carpet with a braided edge. The block centre is located near an exit to the room. The room actually contains 2 doors to and from the room. They are located at opposite ends of the room. Jacob and several others build for a while with the blocks and they begin to spread out. Their constructions spread past the area carpet and onto the floor in front of the exit. A fire alarm goes off. It is announced that they need to leave the building using the exit by the block area. As the educator goes to the door, she trips on the edge of the braided carpet which is torn. It wraps about her ankle, and she tumbles onto several Lego pieces located at the front of the door on the floor.

Educating children on fire safety precautions can help them understand the need to maintain a safer environment when doing their construction. Exit and entrances should be clear and
accessible during all times because they can be used during emergencies. There is also a need to keep entrances free of traffic, avoid tripping hazards on toys, and keep it safe for quick and safe exiting.
