I think we’re afraid of not being able to see what might be there. If there were something right in front of us, we would want to see it. The dark pretty much takes away one of our favored senses. When that is taken away it’s hard to not be scared.
Also, when we can’t see what’s in the dark it leaves our imagination wide open to all of the possibilities of what could be in the dark.
