DNA methylation is the covalent modification of DNA by the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to one of a few possible sites on cytosine (C) or adenine (A). DNA methylation is involved in several biological processes, including restriction and modification, mismatch error correction (a DNA repair process), and the control of eukaryotic gene expression.
