    Answer: When the masses of the constituent particles of a nucleus are added together, the sum is less than the nucleus itself. Binding energy is the mechanical energy required to disassemble a whole atomic nucleus into separate parts.

    the mass of 1 person = 1.007825 amu
    the mass of 1 neutron = 1.008665 amu
    total = 2.016490 amu

    The binding energy is the difference between the mass energy of the nucleus and its constituent particles. To separate the nucleus into a proton and neutron, energy equal to the binding energy must be added to the system.
