Mathematical models use information available on the variables in the model as well as the relationships between these variables to make assumptions about future events. They are especially useful where the system is too complex to depend on instincts alone.

Models are not crystal balls, but they can give the best estimate, compare scenarios, and show how confident you should be in each. Their limits are clear in games of pure chance: Slotozilla’s guide to casinos for phones shows adults how mobile games work, but mathematical models cannot reliably predict individual outcomes from properly functioning random number generators. The sections below explain where forecasting does work.

pixabay

How Does a Mathematical Model Predict a Real-World Event?

Building a model follows a repeatable path, even though the details differ between fields. The main steps are:

First, define your question, such as how many bikes a city-share scheme will need on a sunny weekend

Identify the important variables; ignore everything else.

Find information about these variables based on past observations and current data.

Formulate relationships among them using mathematical equations, statistics, and/or machine learning.

Generate forecasts or scenarios using the model.

Validate the forecasts against actual observations and modify the model if necessary.

Two important safeguards help assess a model’s reliability. First, calibration adjusts the model’s parameters to better match observed data. Second, validation tests how well the model performs on data it has not encountered before, helping reveal whether it has learned useful patterns rather than simply memorised historical observations.

Where Are Mathematical Models Used to Predict Real-World Events?

The same approach works far beyond the laboratory. The table below compares five areas and one current example for each, and the paragraphs after it explain what those systems actually do:

Area

What is forecast

Example used here

Weather

Temperature, storms, and other conditions

ECMWF’s AI ensemble

Disease

Weekly flu hospital admissions

CDC FluSight

Economics

Inflation and its range of outcomes

Bank of England fan chart

Transport

Travel times on roads

Google Maps arrival estimates

Sports

Quality of a scoring chance

Expected goals (xG)

Weather centres now combine physics-based and AI models. On 1 July 2025, ECMWF made its first AI ensemble operational, running 51 forecasts to cover the range of possibilities and reporting gains of up to 20% on some measures. It runs at 31 km resolution, however, while the physics-based model runs at 9 km, so the physics model still matters for detail. Google’s GraphCast beat a leading physics-based model on more than 90% of 1,380 targets.

In epidemiology and economics, models describe a range rather than one number. In the 2025–26 season, 34 teams submitted 53 models to the CDC’s FluSight project, and the ensemble ranked 7th of the 39 evaluated, but it missed the rise in late December and the drop in mid-January. The Bank of England shows uncertainty openly in its fan charts, where each pair of bands represents 10% of the probability, and the bands widen further into the future.

In transport, models predict traffic across the whole journey, which according to DeepMind improved Google Maps arrival estimates by up to 50% in cities such as Berlin, Sydney and Tokyo, and by about 16% in London. In football, expected goals (xG) models rate a shot’s chance of scoring from factors such as distance and angle, so an xG of 0.30 means a goal about 30% of the time over many similar shots, not a certainty for any single one.

illustration

How Accurate Are Mathematical Predictions?

Accuracy is not a single number, because it depends on several things. Four factors matter most:

Quality of data: errors in initial data appear in the forecast as well.

Assumptions: if a model makes assumptions about the constancy of some behavior, it may miss its change.

Design of the model: various designs will result in various forecasts using the same data.

Horizon of forecast: the more distant the forecast, the lower the level of certainty.

In some cases, the system itself limits how far ahead anything can be predicted. Weather is one example, because it is a chaotic system. According to NCAR scientists, small changes at the start can grow into large effects over time.

Why Are Mathematical Models Still Useful If They Can Be Wrong?

The objective is generally not to find a single specific solution. Models allow you to evaluate alternative scenarios, estimate the probability of various outcomes, identify threats early on, and make better decisions despite uncertainty. There are three concepts that people tend to confuse with each other, and it’s useful to distinguish them. Each one answers a particular question:

A prediction states a specific outcome, such as “it will rain at noon”.

A probability states how likely outcomes are, such as a 70% chance of rain.

Decision support compares options under uncertainty, such as whether to carry an umbrella.

If a forecast gives a 70% chance of rain and the day stays dry, that does not automatically mean the forecast was poor. Such predictions should be assessed across many comparable cases. It would be better to treat the model as an instrument for making decisions, together with verification of data and application of human reasoning.

Description: A plain-language guide to how mathematical models turn data into forecasts, with current examples from weather, flu, economics, traffic, and football, and why a forecast is not a guarantee.
