COURSE SYLLABUS

This course is about organization development (OD): the management discipline aimed at improving organizational effectiveness by increasing use of human resources. OD is an emerging behavioral science discipline that provides a set of methodologies for systematically bringing about high-performing organizations. The goals of OD are to make an organization more effective and to enhance the opportunity for the individuals to develop their potential. OD is also about effectively managing in a changing world.

Through the application of a new paradigm-the OD process model-each of the OD stages is described from the standpoint of its relationship to an overall program of change. The course is primarily for those who are learning about OD for the first time. You will learn of the real world through the use of concepts, theories, and numerous illustrations and company examples that show how OD is being applied in today's organizations.

Finally, we hope that you will find the contents very useful and relevant and upon understanding start applying them to your personal and organizational advantage. Let us work together towards your betterment!

Letter grades will be assigned only at the end of the course. Successful completion of the course requires an overall score of at least 60% for undergraduate courses and 70% for postgraduate courses.

CREDITS

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) semester hours of college credit.

COURSE SCHOLARLY PAPER

You may choose an appropriate topic, which is related to any key contents of this course, and which you feel is important to you. Some suggested topics for this course are as follows:

When writing your research paper, please note the following guidelines:

Select a topic that interests you and is related to the contents of this course. Write your scholarly paper no less than 1000 words (excluding the title page, bibliography and appendices). Please e-mail your professor an outline and specific title ofthis paper, prior to starting it. In addition to your primary text, you are required to use a minimum of 5 additional references from professional journals and books to produce your scholarly paper.

Your research paper must adhere to the style and format requirements set forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Your paper must include a title page, headings and a bibliography. Footnotes are not needed. The bibliography is to be used to reference quotes and other previously written works. Appendices containing support information can also be added.


Final Assignment

  1. Define and discuss importance of organization culture.
  2. Managerial effectiveness, managerial efficiency, and motivation climate are three basic organizational dimensions affecting performance that OD programs are aimed at. Define these three dimensions.
  3. Explain what a sociogram is and how it can be used to collect data on a work group.
  4. Name several major factors to consider in the selection of an OD intervention.
