Even if you have the exam looming over your head and you haven’t even picked up the textbook, there is nothing much to worry about. All you need to do is keep calm and follow some simple tips and ways.

Here are a few tips to help you score the best on an Edexcel Math exam, A-level and AS-level:

1. Practice as much as you can

Maths is a subject that requires practice more than any other subject. It is really important for the students to recognise that this subject is entirely based on understanding. You can’t memorise your way out of a maths exam like other subjects. Although in some exceptional cases, you can actually resort to practicing, but you cannot solely depend on it. When you prepare for Edexcel maths, it is imperative for you to practice a lot if you wish to succeed. The whole idea of maths is for you to know and understand the concepts. There will be times when you will think that you can learn the steps and the way a particular type of question works, but it is very important that in such situations, you remind yourself the importance of practice. Even if you are short on time, you should try and practice the type of questions that you get wrong more frequently than the others. Always remember that there is only a fixed types of questions that can be asked in the question paper, so the more you practice, the more are your chances of success.

2. Remember Important Stuff

Maths is full of things that you need to remember. From theorems to formulae to concept, you do need to memorise things. Although as already mentioned above that memorizing can never take the place of studying, but there are some things that are best achieved by memorising only. For instance, in the case of GCSE, there are topics like circle theorems and many other involving formulas. You need to know the answers to these by heart. You can resort to various ways and methods to remember these formulas. You can make cards for each theorem and paste these cards on the wall above the study table. Every time you sit down to study, just go through all these cards once and eventually you’ll memorise them. Go through the previous year’s papers and find the most used formulas. Putting values into a formula is the easiest way to score marks in a maths question paper and it is equally frustrating when you lose out on marks just because you do not remember the formula. So, make sure you don’t do so.

3. Become familiar with the pattern

Before taking up an exam like A-level Mathematics or AS-level math, it is really important for you to get accustomed to the format of the paper. The more you get accustomed to the format of the question papers, the better are your chances of succeeding. In case of GCSE math exam, when you give the foundation tier, the paper generally progresses from shapes to the comparatively easier ‘type’ questions to some more complicated graph-based problems. Then comes the calculator paper. It will be comparatively tougher than the foundation tier. It will end in more time-consuming questions. There will be questions which will include multiple parts and really complicated questions. Then comes the higher tier. In the non-calculator question paper, the graphs will be more prevalent and there will be some really basic questions. On the other hand, the calculator paper will have more complex questions based on topics like area and trigonometry. Also, you should check everything on the calculator once you’re finished. If you find out that you have lost out on marks because of a calculation mistake, it is going to be really frustrating.

4. Be confident

Confidence is the key. Always be confident and believe in your abilities. Keep reminding yourself that no matter what grade you aim for, it’s always achievable if you do the right proportion of labor. There is no point of just aiming for a grade and not working at all. Be absolutely confident and do not panic when you’re actually writing the exam. If you get an intimidating or time consuming question, keep you calm. Many a times, the students tend to lose their calm and eventually spend more time on an already time-consuming question. Even if you don’t remember the entire answer, do as much as you can. Even if the answer you give turn out to be wrong, a major part of your grade will come from the step marks. Also, if you find yourself struggling during the exam, keep calm and look out for questions that you know the solution to. Doing them first will boost you up and give you the confidence that you need to tackle the more difficult questions.

5. Manage your time

When you are preparing for an exam like GCSE Edexcel maths, you need to manage your time to the best of your abilities. Procrastination is one of the biggest barriers in the life of a student. You need to prepare a time schedule and follow it. But make sure that you prepare this schedule according to your needs. Many a times, peer pressure can influence the schedule you prepare for yourself. Also, make sure that you prepare a practical schedule. When you prepare a schedule, it is possible that you eventually end up preparing an impossible one in the excitement of it. So, try and avoid doing so.
