The TRIPs (trade related intellectual property rights) agreements, which forms a part of the Uruguay round to GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade; signed by India and other states), is to date the most comprehensive multilateral agreement on IPR; it became effective on January 1, 1995.
The provisions of TRIPs cover a variety of intellectual properties, including patents and protection of new varieties of plants. Each member country has the option to frame its own patent laws within the broad framework defined in the GATT agreement.
