Ozone reacts vigorously with alkenes to form unstable compounds called molozonides, which rearranges spontaneously to form compounds known as ozonides. Ozonides, themselves are unstable and reduced directly with Zn and water. The reduction produces carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) that can be isolated and identified.
