Equilibrium of a Body

A particle body is said to be in equilibrium if the net force acting on the body is zero. That is,
net force acting on the body is zero along x-axies
net force acting on the body is zero along y-axies
net force acting on the body is zero along z-axies

To analyze the equilibrium of a body, it the following steps are adopted

(i) Mentally isolate the body from its environment or surrounding.

(ii) Identify the forces acting on the body and draw a diagram showing every type of force acting on the body. This diagram is known as free body diagram (F. B. D.)

(iii) Select two mutually perpendicular axes called mutually perpendicular along x-axies and mutually perpendicular y-axies axes and resolve the components of forces along these axes.

(iv) Set the algebraic sum of all x component components and y componentcomponents of forces equals to zero i.e. components of forces equals to zero along x-axies and components of forces equals to zero along y-axies
