11.1 Electromotive force (e.m.f.)

The electromotive force of a source is the energy per unit charge converted from chemical energy (or any other form of energy) to electric energy. For example, a cell or battery converts chemical energy into electrical energy, a generator or dynamo converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The unit of e.m.f. is joule per coulomb (JC–1) or volt (V). An ideal source of e.m.f. maintains a constant potential difference, independent of current through the device.
